Spendiarov opera in Yerevan is world class and is housed in a building that is one of real architectural delights of Yerevan. The Opera and Ballet theatre ensemble rises aloft in the center of Ankakhutyan (Independence) square. The theatre building comprises two halls – an opera hall capable of receiving 1260 spectators, and a grand concert hall, seating 1400. The main auditorium is designed in the form of amphitheater, thus making the stage visible to every spectator. The original integration of two halls into a single building made it possible to create an expressive structure, with its volume gradually diminishing skywards. For this original type of construction, that has no precedent, Tamanian was awarded with Gold Medal at the International Fair in Paris in 1937.
In front of the theatre standing in the spacious square you can see the monuments to two outstanding representatives of Armenian culture: the writer, poet and public figure Hovhannes Tumaninan and of the composer Alexander Spendiarov. Spendiarov’s tomb is close by in the shade of trees.
Spendiarov Opera has a rich repertoire and often features foreign celebrities on guest tours. Performances, by local artists, meet the most exacting standards.
