Stepan Zoryan

Writer, translator, academician (Academy of Sciences 1965), member of the union of writers of the former USSR since 1934. Was born in September 3, 1889, in Gharakilisa (now Vanadzor). In the period form 1896-1898 has studied in a private school. In 1904 has graduated from the local Russian school. In 1906 left for Tbilisi. For the period from 1909 to 1911 worked as a translator for “Surhandak” Daily, from 1912 to 1919 for “Mshak” Daily newspapers. The first story after him “Starving people” was published in 1909, in the newspaper “Luma” Tbilisi.

In 1968, “Armenfilm” has produced a movie based on Zoryan’s tale “Near the spring”, “Garden of Apple-trees” in 1985.

Stepan Zoryan has passed away in October 14, 1967, in Yerevan. His tomb is located in the pantheon after Komitas.

Home-Museum of Stepan Zoryan

This house was built by Stepan Zoryan in 1962-1964.  The council of ministers of Armenian SSR in 1972, has decided to establish Stepan Zoryan’s home-museum in thsi building.  The building was reconstructed in 1982-1983.  After the earthquake of 1988, the building was strengthened and repaired in 1990. Re-opnening of the Home-Museum was on September 15, 1990, to commemorate the 100 years of anniversary of the writer.  The road passing in front of the house was renamed after Stepan Zoryan.
