Vanadzor State Art Gallery was founded in 1974 as a branch of the Armenian State Art Gallery.

With time, it expanded its activity and in 1979 ceased being a branch and became independent. The gallery possesses patterns of modern art, graphics, sculpture as well as applied art. Every month both local and republican painters represent their works in the exhibition hall of the gallery. Today there are 1 826 works of art in the gallery. Excursions and lectures assisting to the population development are periodically held in the gallery. The fund of the gallery is very rich and is constantly enlarged with new patterns.
Scientific cultivation and estimation of the available patterns are performed by the staff of the gallery. On the 2-nd floor of the three-storeyed building they exhibit paintings and on the 1-st floor – sculpture with graphite. Works of Armine Kalents, Lovinya Bazhbeuk-Melikian, Rudolph Khachatrian, Hakob Kojoyan, Grigor Khajian, Aleksandr Grigorian, Artashes Hunanian, Ara Shiraz, Hakob Gyurjian and other famous artists are exhibited in the gallery. Works of H. Ayvazovskie, M. Sarian, Terlemezian, Bashinjaghian were presented by the gallery in former times. There is a special exhibition hall provided for the works of the local artists, such as: V. Gabazian, G. Tovmassian, G. Zalinian, P. Aloyan, V. Vardanian, A. Nazarian.

The gallery involves a culture club called “Art” which periodically gathers art amateurs. The gallery has a custom of organizing exhibitions in different places within the country and beyond. Members of the working staff of the gallery are well aware of the responsibility they carry for preservation of national values, their enrichment and popularity among the public.

In spite of the hard social conditions the gallery still plans its perspectives among which preservation of these values for the next generation is considered a priority. This is the factor that explains the perpetual viability of the creative power of the Armenian people. Modern technique is rarely used in the gallery though its application in the internal works will much facilitate the course of activities. Many economic and financial questions will be solved in case of full self-financing on part of the gallery. Sponsorship provided to the gallery will enable to extend the frames of its activity and to present the national art in line with the European standards.
